Ripon, Wis. --- The Mount Mary University Blue Angels (1-1, 2-13) competed in day two of the Red Hawks Invitational. They lost game one, 3-0, against Buena Vista (5-7, 0-0). They then bounced back against Maranatha Baptist University (0-9, 0-0), where they grabbed their first sweep-style win of the season.
Winning Box Score Highlights:
- Gabby Saucedo Salas (Flagstaff, Ariz.) put up 12 kills. Ava Fincher (Owensboro, Ky.) and Lilly Severson (Cottage Grove, Wis.) added seven and six kills, respectively.
- Abigail Manthey (Mukwonago, Wis.) scooped up a team-high 20 digs. Fincher and Andriana White (Erin, Tenn.) contributed 15 and 14 digs, respectively.
- Fincher locked down 26 total assists.
- White and Rosalinda Palacios (Chicago, Ill.) scored three and two service aces, respectively.
Inside Scoop About the Win:
Set one against the Sabercats was dominated by the Blue Angels. They scored eight points straight, sending Maranatha to take a timeout, 9-3. Following the timeout, the Blue Angels did not lose their momentum as Palacios, Severson, Saucedo Salas, Fincher, and White all put up multiple kills. The Blue Angels won the set 23-9.
The Sabercats started the second set with offensive pressure, 3-1. Mount Mary went on another huge scoring run thanks to Severson and Fincher forcing the Sabercats to take a timeout, 9-5. Following the timeout, the Sabercats were able to string together a few points from Mount Mary errors. The Blue Angels started to pull away after capitalizing on Sabercat errors. Marantha took their final timeout down, 17-11. Following the timeout, White snatched a service ace and kill along with a kill from Saucedo Salas, putting the Blue Angels on top 20-11. The Blue Angels did not let off the gas as they won set two, 25-16.
The Blue Angels were on the hunt to grab their second win of the season and would not back down in set three. Back-to-back kills from Palacios put the Blue Angels on the board first. Severson, Saucedo Salas, and Fincher continued their offensive pressure as they led 12-3. Ciani Williams (Gurnee, Ill.) got in on the action with her consecutive kill attacks. Maranatha could not catch up to Mount Mary. Palacios got another service ace, helping the Blue Angels inch closer to the win, 22-11. Saucedo Salas got the final kill of the match as MMU won 25-15 and won the matchup 3-0.
The Blue Angels have a packed schedule for the upcoming week.
