Improvement Shines Despite Losses On Day Two Of Blue Angel Bash
Milwaukee, Wis.--- The Mount Mary University Blue Angels (0-4, 0-0) were ready to bounce back on day two of the Blue Angel Bash. They matched up with UM-Dearborn (1-2, 0-0) and rematched Mount Marty University (2-1, 0-0). Although major improvement was shown, the Blue Angels dropped both matches 3-0.
Inside the Box Score Game One:
- Lilly Severson (Cottage Grove, Wis.) and Gabby Saucedo Salas (Flagstaff, Ariz.) led with eight kills each.
- Leading the force with 21 assists was Ava Fincher (Owensboro, Ky.)
- Abigail Manthey (Mukwonago, Wis.) scooped up 14 digs while Andriana White (Erin, Tenn.) grabbed nine of her own.
White started things off for the Blue Angels with force as she sent Wolverines diving to start set one. Fincher went on a 5-0 serving run for MMU until the Wolverines kicked it into gear. Another back-and-forth battle filled with kills, blocks, and service aces came on the court. The Wolverines took flight with the Blue Angels not letting them go easy, but ultimately UM-Dearborn took set one 25-23.
In set two, Nevenah Dukic (Oak Creek, Wis.) led the Blue Angels to a 5-0 start. Her powerful serving gave her a service ace. Michigan found themselves with pairs of service aces and kills, which started their largest lead of 17-10. MMU started fighting back, but it was too late to catch the Wolverines, who took the set 25-20.
Set three began with a kill by Saucedo Salas, who hit a hard cross. Severson got in on the fun from a dime set from Fincher. The Wolverines began to pull away and found themself on a four-point service ace run. Severson bounced back and dished out a service ace of her own. Set three was filled with many back-and-forth long rallies, but UM-Dearborn took the sweep and won 25-16.
Inside The Box Score Game Two:
- White and Manthey led on the defensive end with 10 and eight digs, respectively.
- Saucedo Salas led the team once again with five kills.
Set one started with powerful hits from the Lancers, but even better digs. Dukic was in the right place at the right time and scooped up a huge dig. The Lancers capitalized on the Blue Angels and went on a huge ten-point run to determine the difference in the set. Lancers took force and came out on top 25-15.
We saw a new face for the Blue Angels to start set two. Rachel Champion (Tallahassee, Fla.) came off the bench and made her presence known. She grabbed two service aces in set two. MMU could not keep pace with the Lancers and fell short 25-10.
With a sweep in mind, the Lancers were not shying away from bringing it to the Blue Angels. It was all gas and no breaks, bringing a set three victory of 25-9.
The Blue Angel Volleyball team will be back in action on Friday, August 29th, on day one of the Showdown in the Woods at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.
