Blue Angels Start Strong but Fall Short in the Eagle’s Nest
Elgin, Ill. -- The Mount Mary University Blue Angels travelled south to Elgin, Illinois, to compete in their first-ever Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup. They fought hard against the Eagles of Judson University. With only a four-point deficit at the half, the Blue Angels could not contain the aggressive Eagles. The Blue Angels dropped their first game of the season, 77-56.
Highlights From the Box Score:
- Leading the way with 18 points was Mikkalla Robertson (Milwaukee, Wis.). Following behind was Norriah Broomfield (Milwaukee, Wis.)
- Broomfield also secured ten rebounds, marking her first double-double of the season.
The Eagles got on the board first. Broomfield secured an offensive rebound and put-back to get the Blue Angels' first bucket of the night. Broomfield scored another easy bucket, followed by Robertson. Vanessa Diaz (Kissimmee, Fla.) drained a catch-and-shoot three-pointer to tie things up 9-9. Broomfield joined in the three-point fun as she secured MMU's first lead of the game, 12-11. Sanai Ballard's (Highland, Ind.) sneaky defense secured a steal, which resulted in back-to-back Diaz three-pointers, 20-13. The Eagles bounced back and scored three of their own, 20-16. The first quarter finished with an Eagles run to tie things up, 20-20.
Robertson hit a nasty drop-step lefty layup to put the Blue Angels up two to start the second quarter, 22-20. Avery Gorn (Waterford, Wis.) hit her first three-point basket of the night from long range, 25-22. Halfway through the second, the Eagles tied the game again, 27-27. The Eagles found momentum and took over the lead, 33-29, with under three minutes remaining. Robertson finished through contact scoring for the Blue Angels for the first time in over two minutes. The score at the half found the Blue Angels trailing, 36-32.
Coming out of the half, the Eagles scored the first four points, extending their lead to 40-32. Robertson scored a baby hook in the paint for the Blue Angels, 42-34. Deriya Wilson (Milwaukee, Wis.) grabbed a runner off the glass as MMU is trying to close the gap, 44-36. The Eagles grabbed an offensive board and a put-back. Robertson juked out the entire Eagles defense and scored a layup and one to put the Blue Angles down eight, 46-38. The Eagles went on a five-point run before a media timeout, 51-38 in favor of the Eagles. Following the timeout, the Eagles did not let off the gas. Robertson continued to penetrate and find her sweet spot on the left block, 58-43. To finish the third quarter, the Eagles got a quick back-door bucket to take the largest lead of the night, 63-46.
The Blue Angels came out fighting in the fourth quarter. They held onto numerous consecutive offensive rebounds, which led to a layup for Broomfield from Rionne Turner, 63-48. Turner fed Broomfield again to close in on the Eagles, 63-50. Robertson and Wilson added buckets, 73-54. Ivy Morehouse added two free throws to score the final points for MMU. The Blue Angels could not regain momentum, and the Eagles finished the game winning, 77-56.
The Blue Angels will look to bounce back tomorrow, November 13th, as they travel to Andrews University for another non-conference game.
