Muskies Down Blue Angels
Blue Angels get spark in second half, but the Muskies hold on for the win.
MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University women's basketball team lost their fourth straight game tonight against visiting Lakeland University (3-4). Losing by 42 in their first meeting this season, the Blue Angels used a second half push to keep things close. The Muskies came away with a 55-38 win over MMU as LU weathered that storm in the second half.
To begin the contest, the Blue Angels jumped out to a 4-0 lead as they secured the ball on offense and did not allow any penetration in the paint. MMU kept the Muskies scoreless for the first four minutes of the game until a turnover by the Blue Angels led to an 11-2 run for Lakeland which set them up for the lead in the second quarter.
The Muskies applied the pressure defense to begin the second frame, and following a jumper made by Blue Angel Ariel Oviedo (Sr./Shawano, Wis.) at 9:36 on the clock, Lakeland would hold MMU without a score until Rae Grubbs (Fr./Covington, Ind.) knocked down a 3-point field goal with 1:51 remaining in the half. MMU would then flip the tables and hold the Muskies scoreless until halftime where the score was 27-13.
Making the most of their chances at the line, the Blue Angels went 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the third quarter. Generating three team steals and surrendering only four turnovers, the Blue Angels scored 10 points in the third to their opposition's 11.
Then the Blue Angels again pressed the issue as they forced eight team turnovers against the Muskies in the fourth quarter. Hitting six more free throws and going 4-12 from the field, the Blue Angels scored 15 in the final frame.
In a rare turnout, no player from either team scored double digits in points. Blue Angel Rae Grubbs led the game with nine points going 2-of-3 from beyond the 3-point line and hitting 3-of-4 attempts from the free throw line.
"Becky [Onan] has had games with better stats to be sure, but I honestly felt like this was one of her better games as an Angel," said Mount Mary Head Basketball Coach Marc Heidorf of his third year starter. "She was our "security blanket" vs. the pressure and she played within herself. Her mental and physical toughness were on display tonight."
Teammate Becky Onan (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) was right behind Grubbs in scoring with eight points. Onan also led the Blue Angels with seven rebounds and four blocks.
After tonight's game against the Muskies, the Blue Angels will host Central (Iowa). The Dutch fly into the game Sat. Dec.3 with a record of 5-1. Game time is set for 3:00 pm and will have live video and stats available at mtmaryathletics.com.
