MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University Department of Athletics announced Joshua Steffen as its new head basketball coach, effective May 2021.
"I am thrilled to have Josh join our athletics department," MMU Director of Athletics Natalie Balleto said. "He brings great experience as a whole and a fresh perspective for the basketball team. His success with recruiting will ignite a focus on culture and create integral depth for the program. I believe he will find immediate success at Mount Mary and provide a quality experience for the student-athletes."
Steffen brings to MMU 14 years of head coaching experience, most recently serving as head coach at Stephens College, an NAIA-affiliated women's college in Columbia, Mo. With strong roots in the Upper Midwest and the Badger State specifically, Steffen intends to make an immediate recruiting impact with the Blue Angel basketball program.
"I could not be more excited to be part of the community at Mount Mary," Steffen said. "We are committed to building a basketball program where our players grow as people, students, and basketball players, and Mount Mary is the perfect place to empower young women to be the best they can be in all areas of their lives. Some of my greatest basketball memories have occurred in Wisconsin, and I cannot wait to help our players create special memories of their own in our basketball program."
Steffen becomes the fifth coach in program history since Mount Mary University's initial NCAA Division III affiliation in August 2009. He will also share time with the MMU Buildings & Grounds Department as Athletic Facilities & Maintenance Technician.
In two seasons at Stephens, Steffen was responsible for all recruiting, scouting, and player development aspects of the basketball program. He also served as Interim Athletic Director for an 11-month period and handled various compliance duties for the Stars Athletics Department.
Prior to Stephens, he served as head women's basketball coach at Concordia University Chicago, an NCAA Division III and Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference member in River Forest, Ill., from 2008-2014. He was also head coach at NAIA-affiliate Concordia University Ann Arbor (Mich.) from 2002-2008.
Between his stints at CUC and Stephens, Steffen acted as Director of Admissions and Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Living Word Lutheran High School in Jackson, Wis., where he was responsible for all admissions and marketing efforts for the high school.
Steffen earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Wisconsin Lutheran College in 2001, where he also played collegiate basketball for four seasons. He earned a Master of Sports Science in coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 2006. Originally from Champaign, Ill., Steffen attended nearby Milwaukee Lutheran High School.
